maria vernet 1M
Multidisciplinary artist from Barcelona, born in 1979. She has been working in art for more than 20 years. She has performed and participated in festivals, symposiums and solo and group exhibitions in Europe and some South American countries. She is currently directing and designing artistic photography projects at a Men’s Penitentiary Center in Catalonia, where she has been teaching since 2008 and is fully dedicated to art.
For the artist, art and life are inseparable and beyond her work, which she feels like a gift, she raises the concept of the importance of being rather than possessing. Her most recent work in painting and photography stands out for its theme dedicated to portraiture and nature. Her concept manifests a social commitment and vindicates the depth of human feeling with a point of view that often praises beauty out of the established canons.
Maria Vernet 1M dignifies the outcast and evokes the acceptance of suffering to turn art into a way of humanizing life.

NN CARTOGRAPHIES OF BARBARISM
The Mediterranean Sea is the route chosen by thousands of people in search of hope. In recent years, more than 25,000 unidentified bodies (NN) have been recovered. This has been the trigger for this work.
Like a silent scream, these prints emerge from indignation, rage and pain. They are Cartographies of the Barbarism that is closest to me.
Every day thousands of people all over the world take to the sea in precarious boats in the hope of finding a better place and a better life. Or simply to live. They are fleeing wars, dictatorships, racism and famine. Every day, many do not reach their dream destination and disappear at sea. They die because of the selfishness and contempt of the powerful.
My sea is the beautiful blue Mediterranean. But its beauty hides the biggest mass grave on the planet. Every year, thousands of men, women and children disappear in its waters. Anonymous beings that the bureaucracy of death calls NN (No Name) and stamps these acronyms on the bags containing their bodies rescued from provoked shipwrecks.
ABECEDARI DECONTAMINATE
Why is this katakana UNCONTAMINATED?
- Think about what has infected the world these last two years.
- Try to write its name and you will understand why.
- A sense of humor has its place in the face of tragedy.
- It acts as a protective amulet at home.
ABECEDARI DECONTAMINATE" (right) / "Decontaminated Katakana" (left)
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a great impact on the world for the past two years. Humor brings a little comfort to people's hearts and gives them the strength to overcome difficulties. This work is an encouragement to the world to overcome the tragedy of the pandemic and a wish for the end of the pandemic.

I explore the art of transforming ideas, feelings and sensations into images with a meaning and a story beyond aesthetics. Fascinated by the world of typography and printing, I work with silkscreen printing, engraving, monotypes, inks, graphite, movable type... with the freedom to experiment and explore without having to explain myself to anyone.
From my studio in the mountains surrounding Barcelona, I write small stories that are transformed into symbolic images with which I print limited and unique editions of artist's books. Through my works I manage to communicate beyond borders, colours or religions with open-minded people in search of beauty and meaning.
